Book: Gothic and Lolita Bible

leave a comment »

Tokyopop’s Gothic and Lolita Bible is the ultimate source for fans of the gothic lolita and the sweet lolita lifestyle. The mook (magazine/book) is only in its 2nd volume in America but it is pretty well established in Japan and has a HUGE cult following both in Japan and stateside.

G&L contains the newest clothes from Japan’s top lolita designers like Angelic Pretty, Baby the Stars Shine Bright and Metamorphose for the sweet and brands like h NAOTO, Black Peace Now and Algonquins for the more gothic looks. They also feature street lolita looks as well as interviews with designers and girls who live the lolita lifestyle.

The coolest parts of the G&LB in the american version is that they made these clothes accesible to the US population by listing website and ways for foreigners to get these clothes from the top brands as well as warnings about the size conversions since Japanese clothes tend to run much smaller than US sizes. But the best feature of all is with every mook issue, they give you patterns designed by the best designers from their line for you to make at home so you can keep us with the lolita lifestyle!

Food: Milky

leave a comment »

When I was little and whenever we went to Japan, the first thing I would ask for was this candy called Milky” The packaging has a little girl with pigtails sticking out her tongue to the side and I remember always doing that when I was little just like her, that was my way of being cute and getting the candy. Recently Ive seen it more and more in asian grocery stores in america which is so exciting! There really isn’t any candy in the US like it.

They always come in super cute pink or yellow wrappers and its inbetween a hard and a soft candy, so you always try to chew but then your teeth end up stuck together.Overall it basically tastes like sweetened condensed milk in ball form. I can’t really tell if I love Milky so much because it tastes good or really because it reminds me of my childhood maybe a little of both but I know one thing for sure, there are few things that make me happier then randomly finding a bag of Milky at a grocery store.

Fashion:Literature

with one comment

I’m not 100% sure, but I’m overall pretty sure that Literature has changed around their whole line premanently and not for the good. Like Im talking 180 turnaround into suckiness. I was hoping this was like a mid life crisis for the brand and they would find themselves back to their roots of awesome shirts and hoodies, but also it was not meant to be. The only reason Im talking about this brand as obsession worthy is because first of all it was a really awesome brand before they went downhill and secondly if you look hard enough there are still some “vintage” Literature pieces floating around that you can pick up and probably for a lot cheaper than what they charged retail. They were pretty expensive like $185 for a hoodie.

I got super super lucky about 6 or 7 months ago and found this shady little online store that was selling some old Literature pieces for dirt cheap like 15 bucks a hoodie so I snagged as much as possible hoping it was for real and that I wasnt going to totally get ripped off, but luckily a week later I ended up with everything and I can tell you the pieces are even cooler in person and REALLY well made, the hoodies have either asymetrical zippers or gigantic zippers which just look really cool.

So it definitly takes some research to find the old stuff, even ebay doesn’t have too much of it anymore and what they do have is well over a hundred bucks , but Im sure if you want it bad enough its findable. HINT: When Literature changed their style, they also changed their name, The cool stuff is branded as just Literature clothing, the new stuff goes under the name Literature Noir.

Fashion: Tarina Tarantino for Hello Kitty

with 2 comments

I never thought I would get to see the day where there would actually be in exsistence a sweet lolita and gothic lolita Hello Kitty. I have Tarina Tarantino to thank for showing me something that I didnt even know I was searching for and making me now obsessed beyond all belief about.

So basically there are three themes to the Tarina Tarantino Hello Kitty collection: sweet lolita kitty, gothic lolita kitty and bridal kitty. I have no idea what the bridal kitty is all about, I guess supposedly its supposed to be actual bridal jewelry that you could wear to your wedding, but I mean seriously its plastic and it has Hello Kitty on it in a wedding dress who in their right mind is going to have that a their wedding jewelry?!?!

With that said, let’s focus on the sweet and gothic lolitas. Both have hot pink hair (very cool) but sweet wears pink dresses while gothic of course wears black. I’ve always been partial to the gothic lolita myself but I can still definitly appreciate the cuteness of the sweet lolita as well. Anyways I figured Id just show off some of the cool jewelry, the only bad side? The rings alone cost over 80 bucks 😦

Website: JibJab

leave a comment »

So I think most people remember JibJab as the site that made all those crazy political parodies with all the politicans with huge heads and puppet jaws. Well now I think they still make those movies every once in awhile but one of the coolest things thay have done is taken that technology and given the audience more of a chance to be interactive with it.

So now those crazy shorts and silly cartoons you used to watch on JibJab, you can put yourself and your loved ones into them too! Just to warn though you will either find it rediculously hilarious or just really creepy, but I think there is no way that it won’t get some type of reaction out of you, esp if you cast yourself or anyone you know in Snoop Dogg’s Sexual Seduction video. Its funny but you just feel kind of weird… Anyways to show an example I have included a link to a video starring my dog, fiance, my future mother-in-law, an eyeless stuffed monkey and a small cameo of me screaming. enjoy!

Music: Blonde Redhead

with one comment

Blonde Redheadis one of my favorite bands of all time, but when I play them for people it’s sort of a mixed bag. They are kind of an acquired taste. Some people love the melody of the music but can’t stand the lead singer’s (Kazu Makino) voice which is admittedly very high pitched, Or in general they don’t like their unstructured style. Often compared to early Sonic Youth, Blonde Redhead is haunting, beautiful and eccentric. Their music just sounds otherwordly.

While all their albums are really great, I think the best of the best is Misery Is A Butterfly, there is probably more stable melody in this album then any of the others but there was really wasn’t a single song on there I didn’t like, if its your first time listening to Blonde Redhead I would definitly suggest listening to Misery Is A Butterfly, Elepahant Woman, Anticipation and Equus after those slowly immerse yourself in the awesomness that is Blonde Redhead. The following video is a live version of Misery Is A Butterfly

Artist: Sas Christian

leave a comment »

Another Juxtapoz fav, Sas Christian is know for painting the cool looking girls with the enormous eyes. Her paitings are so smooth and detailed it blow my mind that they aren’t digital but actually oil paintings! Whats even more amazing about Sas Christian is that she is completely self taught!!

I see her work everywhere lately even my fiance pointed out some teen book that had a Sas Chritian painting on the cover. Its cool to see such amazing work get out there.

I think one of the neatest things about her paintings is that she shows a girl with a pretty face but just by the eyes or the background or something simple she makes the works seem so deep. My favorite work of hers called “Collette” which I couldnt find a pic of it to put on here is totally simple just a girl with brown hair looking at what I guess is herself as a reflection in a window because the background of the faded street makes it seem like she has no body or she is see through. Its just a really beautiful painting.
